How we met
Written by Martin
Dani and Martin met in a high school advanced Spanish class. Martin was a junior, hanging in there with the class as a gringo who grew up speaking some Spanish. Dani was a Freshman, but absolutely crushing the class as a native Spanish-speaker.
As part of a class project about Colombia, Dani and Martin taught the class how to dance Cumbia. In hanging out together they discovered a shared interest in music (though Dani the mastermind already knew Martin liked music and played guitar due to an article about Martin’s high school band in the school newspaper).
Anyways, Dani, still the mastermind, suggested a joint performance at an upcoming youth open mic night. It was nice. Some more jam sessions and performances followed, and they went to prom “as friends.”
Fast forward 4 years. While going to separate, but similarly prestigious California colleges, and continuing to share music and occasional jam sessions, the long dormant ember of their love finally burst into flame. Official dating commenced, swapping time back and forth between Estánfor and UC Santa Cruz.
7 years then flew by including lots of travel, music, dancing, beaches, dogs, family, friends, sailing, a pando, and a long-deliberated move to Brooklyn, New York. Then, on a beach in Normandy (not that beach in Normandy), Martin and Dani arrived after a long sweaty hike to a beautiful rocky beach with high cliffs and arches. Martin got down on a knee to profess his love for Dani and propose marriage. Dani accepted the proposition.
